It was a rare day but a great day to walk into the house after school and smell the spicy aroma of hot Chex Mix. I'm betting there are many people out there who aren't even aware that Chex Mix was once a homemade affair. Those bags you see in 7-11 don't capture one tenth of the magic of the homemade stuff. This is perfect for snacking on while sitting by the tree and watching Clark and Eddie drink eggnog.
Ingredients
9 cups Chex cereal (any variety-- I like rice. Some people go nuts and do all three types. I just can't have that much friggin' cereal hanging around.)
1 cup Goldfish crackers
1 cup pretzels (I use Snyder's Honey Mustard & Onion Nibblers-- shockingly good)
1 cup mixed nuts
1 small bag plain M&Ms
1 small bag peanut M&Ms
1/2 cup raisins
1 stick butter
1 tablespoon chili powder
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
How To
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Put the Chex and goldfish in a large bowl. In a sauce pan, melt the butter and add the Worcestershire sauce, salt, garlic powder and onion powder. Pour over the cereal mixture and mix very well until all the pieces are coated. Pour this mixture onto a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes.
Let the cereal cool, then combine with the remaining ingredients.

I have my 1970s recipe which calls for 6 cups of cereal to 6 Tbs of butter and 3/8 tsp of garlic as opposed to the 10+ cups of cereal to 6 Tbs of butter and 1/4 tsp of garlic on today's box - no wonder today's mix is no good!!
