How excited would you be to come to a house for a birthday brunch to see this? What a spread! My brother and sister-in-law put this beautiful brunch together to celebrate the second birthday of their daughter (and my niece) Ruby.
I love the blurry arm of someone who couldn't wait for the picture to be taken and went in to grab some treats. The star of the show was homemade ful with cumin, paprika and whatever else you wanted to add to the bowl.
Ful is a common Middle Eastern breakfast. It's filling, inexpensive, easy to make and dang tasty. We just might start having beans for breakfast round these parts.
Ful consists primarily of fava beans. My sister-in-law's mother told me the recipe-- take a can of fava beans and put them in a sauce pan with some crushed garlic, lemon juice, olive oil and salt to taste. Let everything bubble together for at least 30 minutes and smash some of the fava beans with the back of the spoon to make it a little thicker. Add a can of garbanzo beans at this point, if you want. Serve hot. This is one of those things I wish you could reach into your computer screen and taste because it doesn't sound as delicious as it is.

fava beans are such a pain in the *** to prepare. Is that a big CAN of fava beans?? I want them. I hve found frozen before, I think . . .
What is the bowl of yellow things? Yellow tomatoes? Persimmon?
It is, indeed, a giant can of fava beans! I wonder if they are hard to find outside of Southern California? I think they're worth a little detective work.
The yellow things were very sweet clementines.
I lurve Ful! It sets you up for the whole day :)
